Abstract

Estas son, fundamentalmente, unas notas, que combinan bastante descripción y alguna reflexión, surgidas a partir del período de tiempo que el autor estuvo en Inglaterra estudiando la figura de Peter Kropotkin. ¿Quién era Kropotkin? La biografía del llamado príncipe anarquista nacido en 1842 y muerto en 1921 combina a partes iguales el logro intelectual y científico y el aura romántica. Kropotkin se convierte en el propagador más importante del comunismo anárquico, y en la figura intelectual de referencia dentro del movimiento libertario hasta el advenimiento de la Gran Guerra. Pero Kropotkin también era el científico, el intelectual que llegaba a públicos que desbordaban claramente los limites de la militancia libertaria. Geógrafo eminente, fue miembro de la "Britisb Association for the Advancement of Science", escribiendo libros sobre temas tan diversos como la revolución francesa, el sistema de prisiones y su influencia sob re los presos, el cultivo intensivo o la literatura rusa. Sin embargo, la faceta por la que es más conocido, que es la que aquí nos ocupa, es la de su aportación al debate sobre las consecuencias éticas del darwinismo. En este sentido "Mutual Aid. A factor of Evolution", suele ser citado tanto como una refutación del darwinismo social , como uno de los precedentes de los estudios sobre la conducta altruista en animales.

El libro "Evolucionismo y Cultura: Darwinismo en Europa e Iberoamérica", del que procede este artículo, se ha elaborado en el marco del proyecto de investigación DGICYT nºPB98-0658, "Medio siglo de controversía evolucionista: 1859-1910", dirigido por Andrés Galera.
