Abstract

[EN] This paper uses data provided by recent fieldwork to reassess the evolution of the habitat and settlement patterns in southern Catalonia, as well as its relation with social and ideological transformations. Former research usually supported the concept of a late appearance of proto-urban settlements in this area, related to socioeconomic transformations linked to Phoenician trade. On the contrary, we suggest the emergence of proto-urban settlements, with stone structures, took place as early as the 10th century BC. Fuerthermore, this paper proposes a pre-Iberian origin for the phenomenon of the tower-houses and, consequently, for the soalled “aristocratic episode of the early Iberian period”.
