Abstract

[ES] Se estudiaron los patrones de crecimiento radial y los efectos de la historia del dosel y el clima sobre el crecimiento de hayas (Fagus sylvatica L.) y robles (Quercus robur L.) maduros, en un bosque del litoral de Cantabria. Los árboles mostraron entre 150 y 270 años de edad, y diámetros del tronco de hasta 86 cm en las hayas y 129 cm en los robles. Los tipos más abundantes de patrones del crecimiento en el caso del haya presentaron un notable aumento del crecimiento desde 1900 hasta la actualidad. Este patrón fue el resultado de perturbaciones ocurridas en los años 1929, 1956 y 1978, las cuales provocaron un significativo aumento en el crecimiento del haya por encima de lo esperado. Por el contrario, la historia del dosel tuvo escasa repercusión en el roble. Los tipos más abundantes para el roble pre- sentaron un patrón de crecimiento exponencial negativo o lineal descendente, los cuales serían esperados para esta especie en ausencia de perturbaciones, y solo un 26% de las series de crecimiento mostraron los efectos de las perturbaciones. La variabilidad climática explicó un 28,4% de la variación en el crecimiento del haya y un 26,7% en el roble. La precipitación de julio mostró un efecto positivo sobre el crecimiento radial del roble, mientras que el crecimiento del haya estuvo limitado por las altas temperaturas en junio y julio. Estos resultados sugieren la importancia de un posible calentamiento climático sobre la productividad de los bosques naturales.

[EN] Radial growth patterns and the effects of canopy history and climate on the growth of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and oak (Quercus robur L.) in a mature forest in the Cantabrian lowlands, were studied. Tree ages ranged between 150 to 270 years, and their diameters were of up to 86 cm in beech and 129 cm in oak. The most frequent growth pattern in beech showed a conspicuous rising trend since 1900 to nowadays. This pattern was a consequence of disturbances that occurred in 1929, 1956 y 1978, which accounted for a significant increment in beech growth rates above those expected from random observations. On the other hand, oak growth was only slightly affected by canopy history. The most abundant growth patterns were negative exponential or monotonic descendent, which could be expected for oak in the absence of disturbances. Also, only 26% of the radial growth patterns of oak showed disturbance signals. The climate variability accounted for 28.4% of beech’s ring-width variation and 26.7% of oak’s one. Precipitation in July showed a positive effect on oak radial growth, while beech growth was negatively related to temperature in June-July. These results suggested the feasible effects of climate warming on the productivity of natural forests.
