La capacidad funcional de los ancianos españoles

Abstract

Results: Eight out of ten elderly in Spain are able to develop any ADL without help, according to their requiered physical effort, handiness or mobility. Older, females, widowed and those refering bad health conditions are usually more unable. Loneliness is associated with the ability for household activities. Social status and size of place of residence do not seem to affect functional disability using this source.

Method: The National Health Survey (Ministry of Health, 1993) was used to mesure the functional ability of non-institutionalized people aged 65 years and over (3361 individuals) inthree groups of activities: self-maintenance, household and mobile activíties. Their scores were associated with sociodemographic and health variables obtained from the same source.

Conclusions: Social roles, by gender and marital status, contribute to a better knowledge of the elderly's independence for doing some or other ADL. More prevalent but less serious diseases have a particular influence on non-institutionalized elderly. Variables as social status or size of place of residence requiere a more specific analysis.

[EN] Background: To analyse the ability of the elderly people to carry out activities of daily Iife (ADL) and their conditioning factors.
