La viticultura en Australia

Abstract

Australia produce alrededor de la tercera parte del vino que España, eso sí, con sólo 160.000 hectáreas de viñedo, es decir, casi 8 veces menos de la superficie vitícola española. En los últimos años el sector vitivinícola australiano ha tenido un crecimiento espectacular, batiendo todos los récords. Ha aumentado notablemente su superficie vitícola, la producción de vino y sus exportaciones. La viticultura australiana comenzó en 1788 cuando el Capitán Arthur Phillip plantó las primeras cepas cerca de Sydney. Desde aquí, la viticultura llegó a Hunter Valley y posteriormente se difundió a otras zonas como al valle de Barossa o Coonawarra. Actualmente, la vid se cultiva principalmente en los estados con clima no tropical, siendo los principales estados vitivinícolas South Australia, Victoria y New South Wales. Hoy, Australia ya no es un país ni nuevo ni emergente en el sector, es una pujante realidad, con la más moderna vitivinicultura mundial. Después de describir los rasgos más importantes del sector vitivinícola australiano (Tardáguila et al., 2005), en este artículo se describen las características y la evolución de la viticultura australiana.
