Abstract

[EN]: It doesn’t exist a scientific consensus for a definition of our own species. The genomic analyses from different human populations is showing a higher than previously expected interindividual variation. Therefore, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to put a limit on this variation from the study of contemporary populations exclusively. In this sense, the Neandertal genome will contribute to have an external evolutionary reference, at the same time close enough to us in time, for unraveling with certainty which genetic variants are shared with Neandertals and which are present in modern humans alone. This will allow us to obtain an objective definition of our own species, although this will be at the end a complex list of genetic variants.
