[EN]: This article explores the process of decision- making by which the dukes of Medina Sidonia –being at this time the main military authority in the Lower Andalusia- took strategic decisions regarding to the harbour in which should the Atlantic Armada remain during the winter season. Seignourial interests, defensive priorities and prestige matters were some of the issues that more clearly influenced in a series of debates in which, although the distance, the Medina Sidonia’s where able to be listened by the government in Madrid.
[ES]: En este artículo planteamos el estudio de los diversos planos que convergían en la toma de posición de los duques de Medina Sidonia –capitanes generales del Mar Océano y Costas de Andalucía entre 1588 y 1641– respecto a un debate estratégico concreto, como era la elección del puerto de invernada de la Armada del Mar Océano. Intereses señoriales, necesidades defensivas y cuestiones de prestigio se dieron cita en una serie de discusiones en las que la voz distante del duque andaluz se hizo sentir de forma muy notable en Madrid.
