Abstract

La abundante y dispersa información científica obtenida en las sucesivas campañas antárticas españolas hizo necesario acometer un proceso de recopilación de resultados y modelos científicos vinculados a la isla Decepción y su entorno. Las prestaciones de los sistemas SIG para gestionar grandes volúmenes de información que necesitan estar georeferenciados y sobre todo sus capacidades para proporcionar analizar dicha información, crear relaciones topológicas y efectuar análisis espaciales hicieron que se acometiera el diseño, desarrollo de un sistema de información para la isla Decepción. Este sistema de información, denominado SIMAC, es un sistema de información cuyo objetivo principal es albergar toda la información científica que existe sobre la isla Decepción, en orden a facilitar el acceso, el procesado de los datos y el análisis científico de dicha información multidisciplinar. En este trabajo se presenta el diseño, metodología, desarrollo y estado actual del sistema así como algunas aplicaciones realizadas.

There is a lot of information collected throughout the Spanish Antarctic campaigns and a need to compile the results and scieotific models joined to Deception Island and its surroundings. Geographical Wormation Systems (GIS) are Information Systems desigoed for working with a lot of georeferenced data and it is an environment for the analysis, creation and study oftopological relations, as well as spa tial studies. These characteristics were Basic to design and development of a GIS for Deception Island. This GIS, Toe Multidisciplinary Scientific Inforrnation Support System (SIMAC), is an information system whose main purpose is to handle ali the scientific information that exists in a local area under study, in order to facilitate access, data processing and analysis of multidisciplinary information. In this article we present the design, methodology, development and current status as well as sorne applications.
