Biosensores: Los dispositivos analíticos del futuro (II)

Abstract

[EN]: Biosensor will have an impact on people's daily lives in the not too distant future. The future analytical devices, as they are called, are formed by a biological recognition system in intime contact with an adequate transducer, giving place to a biodevice which is unique in analytical chemistry. These biodevices can fill very real needs in health care, environmental monitoring, agricultural field and industrial processes control. An actual market of about $100 million and a potencial market of $900 million for the year 2000 are the main reasons to explain the boom of these devices. In this article, the authors will giye an overview of biosensors: their way of function, their main applications, advantages and marketing, with special attention to the role that the polyrneric materials have had in their development, performance and function.
