BixOyIz multifuncionales – fotocatálisis solar y enfriamiento pasivo – para aplicaciones en construcción sostenible

Abstract

La búsqueda de materiales fotocatalíticos activos bajo luz visible, sostenibles y ambientalmente seguros, representa una línea estratégica en el desarrollo de tecnologías orientadas al control de contaminantes y a la mitigación del sobrecalentamiento urbano. En este trabajo se presenta la síntesis, caracterización y evaluación funcional de oxiyoduros de bismuto (BixOyIz), obtenidos mediante coprecipitación dependiente del pH. Esta estrategia permitió obtener BiOI con morfologías diferentes – nano-láminas y microesferas –, así como Bi4O5I2 (nano-láminas), Bi5O7I (agujas), y la heteroestructura BiOI/Bi5O7I. Los materiales resultantes son de naturaleza microparticulada y potencialmente activos para fotocatálisis bajo irradiación visible, lo que representa una ventaja respecto al TiO2 P25, cuyo uso está limitado por su actividad exclusiva en la región UV y sus potenciales riesgos asociados a la nanotoxicidad. Además, el proceso de coprecipitación empleado es respetuoso con el medio ambiente y energéticamente eficiente, al realizarse en medio acuoso y a temperatura ambiente, lo que refuerza su carácter sostenible y escalable. Las muestras fueron exhaustivamente caracterizadas y se evaluó su actividad fotocatalítica bajo irradiación UV y visible en distintos escenarios: degradación de fenol en agua, inactivación de Escherichia coli y la eliminación de óxidos de nitrógeno (NOx) en aire, confirmando su aplicabilidad en la remediación ambiental. Paralelamente, los materiales exhibieron una elevada reflectancia en el infrarrojo cercano (NIR) y una alta emisividad térmica, propiedades que los posicionan como pigmentos multifuncionales con capacidad combinada de fotocatálisis visible y enfriamiento pasivo (“cooling”).
