Abstract

[EN] Human demand for the use of natural resources has increased considerably in the last decades. As a result, rational Land Use Planning policies are required to avoid their destruction or deterioration. With this aim, the D.G. de Urbanismo y Ordenación Territorial de la Consellería de Obras Públicas, Urbanismo y Transportes de la Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Community regional authorities), has commissioned us to study the land use capability as a natural resource and the water erosion risk of the Valencian Community (Spain) on a 1:50.000 scale. The land capability methodology of Sánchez et al. (1984), modified by Antolín et al. (1997) has been used for this study. Less than the 3% of the land is suitable for agricultural purposes and areas with soils suffering from little or moderate limitations account for a third of the evaluated land. The remainder of our territory shows severe or very severe limitations that restrict any agricultural use. The present study allows the establishment of a first reference level in land use management.
