DEPFET: A silicon pixel detector for future colliders. Fundamentals, characterization and performance

Abstract

El Modelo Estándar de la física de altas energías que describe las partículas y las interacciones entre ellas, explica el problema de las masas mediante el mecanismo de Higgs. El elemento fundamental de dicha teoría, el bosón de Higgs, no ha sido descubierto todavía, aunque se espera poder encontrarlo en el acelerador LHC (Gran Colisionador Hadrónico), recién puesto en marcha en el CERN, a las afueras de Ginebra (Suíza). Dentro de la comunidad científica existe el consenso de que aunque el LHC será la máquina que descubra dicho bosón, será necesaria la fabricación de una nueva generación de aceleradores electrón-positrón para hacer medidas de precisión de su masa, acoplamientos, spin, etc, debido a las ventajas que ofrecen este tipo de máquinas sobre los colisionadores hadrónicos: estados iniciales bien definidos, cinemática conocida y señales físicas limpias sobre fondos moderados. Las nuevas máquinas propuestas servirán tanto para romper la barrera de la energía en centro de masas (como el ILC o Colisionador Lineal Internacional) creando nuevas partículas más pesadas, como la de la luminosidad (como SuperKEKB), recogiendo grandes cantidades de datos y mirando las desviaciones de las medidas respecto a las predicciones del Modelo Estándar.
