Abstract

[EN] This essay illustrates some characteristics of the genre of travel literature through texts selected from the chronicles of discovery and conquest of the New World. The primary sources are Columbus’ Diarios and Cartas, the Relaciones of Cortés and the Naufragios of Alvar Núñez, all of which contain the aspects necessary to be considered part of the travel literature genre. The particular form these materials assume (letters and reports) does not hinder their perusal, since what we are examining is a genre elusive by nature, which throughout history has been disguised in the clothing of different genres or has simply been absorbed by them. We believe many of the formal and paratextual processes of the genre acquire shape and are reinforced in the chronicles of discovery and conquest of the New World
