Abstract

Cuando el Zoo de Barcelona se inauguró en 1892, su primer director, Francesc Darder (1851-1918), lo veía cómo “la primera piedra del futuroparque zoológico de aclimatación y naturalización”. Darder quiso crear un centro para la cría de especies útiles, sobre todo aves de corral. En los primeros años del zoo se organizaron subastas de gallinas, de huevos fecundados y otros productos animales. Más tarde este programa se extendía hacia la piscicultura, pues se estableció un laboratorio ictiogénico en 1909 dentro del zoo. La zootécnica prometía un aumento sustancial en la producción de carne y pescado para aliviar la escasez de alimentos y así también suavizar las enormes tensiones sociales de la época en Cataluña. Acostumbrados hoy en día a una visión del zoo como lugar de instrucción para el gran público, el entretenimiento y la conservación de especies, un concepto tan utilitarista del zoo podría extrañar. Pero una mirada más amplia hacia otros zoos del fin-de-siècle demuestra que el Zoo de Barcelona no era ninguna excepción en cuanto a la comercialización y cosificación de los animales. Las nociones de una historia natural aplicada y de la aclimatación de animales útiles estaban muy extendidas en Europa y más allá. Este artículo describe cómo se desarrolló el programa de Darder en la práctica, lo sitúa en su contexto internacional y explica cómo el Zoo de Barcelona finalmente abandonó su agenda utilitarista.
