Origen y evolución del caballo

Abstract

El origen del caballo se podría datar hace más de cincuenta millones de años, periodo en el que el Eochippus, también denominado Hyraotherium, pastaba en las zonas más boscosas y de terreno blando. Este animal prehistórico medía unos 35 cm de alzada, y poseía cuatro dedos en las extremidades delanteras y tres en las traseras. Con el transcurso del tiempo fue haciéndose cada vez más grande, apareciendo tres tipos de caballos a partir de él: el Meshohippus ( con unos 50 cm de alzada y con tres dedos en ambos miembros de apoyo); el Miohippus (con veinte centímetros más que el anterior y sólo un dedo en las cuatro extremidades y el Parahippus (de cerca de 80 cm de alzada)....
