Linnaeus is likely to be the main systematizer of animals and plants. He was the modern creator of the species concept and his proposals are still in vogue nowadays. This does not mean that there were not earlier naturalists dealing with organisms and their features. Regarding algae, there were scholars dated back to centuries before Christ that described forms and what Linnaeus later called "species". Here I outline briefly those "scientists" and their achievements in the world of algae, both in marine- and freshwaters.
