Abstract

[EN] Our research evaluates the most-likely direct insured economic impact in Spain for a 0.5% yearly exceedance probability of tsunami occurrence. Over 6 million of tsunami flood simulations have been carried out at 5m/pixel resolution (Gonzalez et al. 2022) in High Performance Computing. Tsunamigenic sources have proposed from QAFI v. 4.0 (IGME, 2022) and considering the tsunami event database of IGN (2023). We found that the “worst case scenario” is closely linked to the distribution of insured items in relation to the tsunami sources, rather than to the magnitude of the tsunami. The likelihood of a high impact tsunami may not only be expected in the Atlantic coast, as previously thought; the Mediterranean may suffer significant property damage even with relatively small tsunami events. Direct insured property damage has been estimated to be less than 2.2 x109 € with a 95% frequency. This figure is a minimums approach, provided chained effects and other co-seismic outcomes have not been considered.
