La situación del conejo de monte en la Península Ibérica, de donde es originario, es paradójica siendo al mismo tiempo especie en peligro de conservación y plaga para la agricultura. Lo primero se debe a que ha disminuido drásticamente en muchos lugares, principalmente como consecuencia de sucesivas pandemias víricas. Por el contrario, los conejos han aumentado en algunas zonas agrícolas, donde causan daños a los cultivos que pueden llegar a ser severos. Este incremento está estrechamente ligado a actividades humanas, como la construcción de autovías o vías de tren de alta velocidad.
