Headley (1996) sugirió que el incremento en la concentración de metales pesados en las turbas árticas era resultado de su aumento en las heces de las aves marinas, las cuales devolverían a tierra firme, magnificados, los contaminantes de origen antrópico presentes en el mar. Más recientemente Blais et al. (2005) han mostrado, en el ártico canadiense, que dicho efecto boomerang se extiende a metales tóxicos y a pesticidas.
