Muchas cuencas de antepaís muestran una evolución tectónica compleja caracterizada por presentar varias etapas pre-orogénicas que han podido influir en su patrón de deformación, evolución de subsidencia y/o historia térmica. Este es el caso de la cuenca del Ebro, que se formo sobre un rift Mesozoico preexistente caracterizado por dos etapas de rifting e influenciado también por estructuras variscas anteriores.
