Abstract

Fue una de las primeras instituciones de España dedicadas al fomento de la microbiología, disciplina científica erigida en Francia por el químico Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) a finales del siglo xix y que se extendió en nuestro país, teniendo en Madrid uno de sus más importantes escenarios de desarrollo. A finales del siglo xix los conocimientos de la microbiología sanitaria se integrarían en las enseñanzas de higiene impartidas en las cátedras de Anatomía Patológica de las facultades de Medicina, que incluirían unas prácticas de bacteriología ya en el siglo xx. Los establecimientos como estos, en los que existían microscopios, han sido propuestos como los primeros en trabajar en microbiología, contribuyendo así al desarrollo de la denominada medicina de laboratorio, que defendía la aplicación del microscopio a la patología y a la clínica, y también a la microbiología. Además, algunos médicos a título personal montaron asignaturas y laboratorios privados donde se comenzó la práctica de la entonces denominada bacteriología. Para todo ello, Madrid fue un escenario de desarrollo idóneo.
