Abstract

The Fossil Invertebrates and Paleobotany collections contain numerous historical specimens that keep their original labels. The diversity and the optimal preservation of these labels provide an important historical and scientific value to those collections. From the different types found, some singular golden labels which appear glued to both fossil of invertebrates and plants stand out from the others. These labels usually appear in association with other handwritten labels that include taxonomic, geographic and stratigraphic data on the specimens. The analysis of this information allowed narrowing down the manufacturing date of these labels to the last two years of the XIX century, and Professor of Paleontology Francisco Vidal y Careta was identified as the author. The finding of documents with the date of purchase of the golden labels, together with the author, have finally led to establish that these set of labels was most likely created to identify the pieces in the new Museum exhibition inaugurated in 1902 after its moving to the Madrid Palace of Libraries and Museums.
