Ecología de las interacciones entre parásitos y hospedadores

Abstract

Las interacciones conforman la base de la arquitectura de la biodiversidad. El estudio de las interacciones entre parásitos y hospedadores es un tema central en ecología evolutiva, necesario para entender múltiples procesos ecológicos y evolutivos en los seres vivos, y con implicaciones profundas sobre el bienestar animal y humano. En este breve ensayo he resumido algunas de las principales contribuciones que hemos llevado a cabo en las últimas décadas, que abarcan desde las respuestas fisiológicas, inmunológicas y comportamentales que exhiben los hospedadores para hacer frente a las infecciones parasitarias, hasta los mecanismos que utilizan los parásitos para poder localizar y explotar a sus hospedadores. En los últimos años, la incorporación del estudio de la microbiota se está revelando como un elemento clave que nos va a permitir entender con mayor precisión diversos aspectos de las interacciones entre los parásitos y sus hospedadores en la naturaleza.
