El presente artículo analiza la trayectoria vital de Juan Bautista Marcaida, comerciante de Manila de origen vasco que, a mediados del siglo XIX, tuvo intereses en los sectores industrial y agrícola de Filipinas e intervino en el tráfico de trabajadores asiáticos. A través de este caso se hará una aproximación a las relaciones de los empresarios radicados en Filipinas con el Estado colonial, a modos de socialización de estos empresarios y a las reacciones de estos ante un panorama económico cambiante.
