OPENS: Tras los ladrillos de la vida

Abstract

El proceso del origen de la vida viene caracterizado por saltos hacia la complejidad química. Estudios recientes muestran que dicha complejidad podría iniciarse en el medio interestelar, el cual podría formar compuestos de tipo prebiótico que posteriormente son incorporados a objetos menores del Sistema Solar como asteroides y cometas. Como resultado, nuestro planeta podría haber recibido grandes cantidades de material prebiótico durante el período de bombardeo masivo que experimentó hace 4100-3800 millones de años, favoreciendo la génesis de las primeras biomoléculas. El proyecto OPENS (the Onset of Prebiotic chEmistry iN Space)1, que ha sido recientemente seleccionado por el European Research Council dentro del programa ERC CoG 2023, buscará aquellos compuestos prebióticos que se forman en el medio interestelar, y estudiará no sólo sus procesos de formación sino también los procesos de destrucción, determinando la probabilidad de supervivencia de los mismos en las condiciones extremas del medio interestelar.
