Una visión integrada de las comunidades bentónicas marinas de la alta Antártida: diez años de estudios en el Mar de Weddell en el marco del Programa EASIZ

Abstract

El Programa EASIZ-SCAR (Ecology of the Antarctic Sea Ice Zone) comenzó en 1994 con el fin de incrementar la cooperación internacional en la investigación antártica. Uno de los principales objetivos fue potenciar el estudio del papel de las plataformas continentales y especialmente de las comunidades bentónicas en el océano Antártico. Esta iniciativa surgió en parte como complemento y alternativa a otros programas internacionales que centraban sus actividades en el océano abierto. Las actividades experimentales y los distintos proyectos de investigación se han llevado a cabo durante cinco campañas oceanográficas a bordo del B/O Polarstern y en colaboración con el Instituto Alfred Wegener de Bremerhaven (Alemania). Más de 20 investigadores del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (CSIC) de Barcelona y de las Universidades de Barcelona y Sevilla han llevado a cabo distintos proyectos encaminados a obtener una visión integrada de los ecosistemas marinos antárticos, tomando como punto de partida la investigación multidisciplinar de las plataformas de hielo del Mar de Weddell.
