El uso de raíces y afijos de origen grecolatino para formar neologismos es uno de los recursos léxicos más característicos de la terminología científica en general, y médica en particular. Junto a los helenismos y latinismos clásicos, es decir, empleados ya en los textos antiguos y medievales, existe un elevado número de cultismos modernos creados desde los siglos XVI al XX.
