Abstract

[EN] The Alboran Sea has been affected by a seismic series since 2021, predominantly centered on the Ras Tarf seamount. This high bears a striking resemblance to a volcanic edifice and is situated near the Rif Cordillera coast. The seismicity exhibits swarm characteristics, with earthquakes reaching a maximum magnitude of Mb=4.5. There are concerns about interpreting this active seismicity, whether it signifies the potential reactivation of a dormant volcano or has a tectonic origin. The potential inland spread of seismic activity poses a threat. Geological data, seismicity records, gravity, magnetic, and seismic reflection profiles have been integrated. The findings suggest a tectonic origin linked to a rigid and now cold igneous body within softer host rock. This brittle body is under stress from the nearby Betic-Alboran-Rif shear zone, the western boundary of the tectonic indenter in the central Alboran Sea
