Abstract

[EN] Both the European earthquake-resistant building codes (Eurocode-8) and the draft of the new Spanish earthquake-resistant building code (NCSR-23) consider the presence of active faults in the design. The NCSR-23 includes the distance to the fault as a fundamental design parameter for general buildings and for special-importance structures, such as bridges and pipelines. In the draft NCSR-23, fault distances are defined to take into account near-field effects in the ground motion levels, as well as to assess potential surface rupture (permanent surface deformation). To provide an earthquake geology perspective on the use of fault distance we have assessed the sensitivity of the required distances to fault traces contained in the QAFI (v4) database. We have also evaluated the permanent deformation expected at the surface by fault rupture with elastic dislocation models in order to assess the minimum safety distance to the fault trace. We have foun that the geometry at depth of the fault, as well as its kinematics (slip and rake), are of particular importance, so a thorough review of these parameters in the active fault database is recommended
