Abstract

[EN] The present-day crustal deformation along the southern Iberian and northern African margins is influenced by the NW-SE convergence (4-5 mm/yr) between the African and Eurasian plates. This convergence results in a broad deformation zone with significant seismic activity, mostly characterized by low to moderate magnitude events. However, the occurrence of large and destructive earthquakes (Intensity > IX) in the region underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of active structures in the Alboran Sea. During different geoscientific cruises carried on the last decade, we have acquired high-resolution bathymetric data and MCS profiles to investigate fault systems in the Alboran basin, including the Yusuf fault system. This is a right-lateral strike-slip fault system with a WNW-ESE trend, giving rise to the Yusuf pull-apart basin. The analysis of the high-resolution bathymetry shows that the Yusuf fault system exhibits three distinct zones: a) the Yusuf lineament to the west; b) in the central zone, the Yusuf basin, deepening eastwards and bounded by the Yusuf Ridge; and c) to the east, the Habibas escarpment, where the fault system narrows. In addition, along the slopes related to the fault activity there is evidence of a large number of submarine mas transport deposits. The interpretation of the MCS profiles reveals that the fault system consists of several faults, predominantly vertical, probably converging on a fault at depth. Notably, some faults offset the seafloor surface, indicating the Quaternary activity of the fault system
