Más allá de las fronteras: la expansión territorial de un modelo hidráulico a finales de la Edad Media. El caso de las fuentes abovedadas entre España y Portugal

Abstract

El final de la Edad Media y los inicios de la época Moderna suponen un momento clave para la configuración de la línea fronteriza entre los distintos territorios ibéricos. No obstante, esta frontera política, tal y como ha sido ampliamente estudiado en la historiografía medieval, no siempre se corresponde con una frontera cultural. Desde un punto de vista arqueológico dicha idea se materializa en algunos elementos de arquitectura doméstica, entre ellos en las fuentes abovedadas con depósito. Se trata de un modelo, construido a partir del siglo XV, diseñado para el abastecimiento hídrico de las crecientes cabañas ganaderas, y promovido mayoritariamente por los concejos. Así a ambos lados de toda la línea fronteriza y especialmente entre los territorios meseteños, extremeños y los lusos, se puede observar la presencia generalizada de este tipo de fuentes, en las que se repiten modelos morfológicos muy similares. Esta expansión posiblemente se deba a la movilidad de ciertos maestros constructores especializados, que han sido documentados en algunos territorios como Aragón. Al mismo tiempo las propias vías pecuarias de transito trashumante y trasterminante pueden haber funcionado como medios de propagación del modelo, que también se asocia al abastecimiento de dichos trazados.
