Las nuevas formas de comunicación en Internet, como el chat, el correo electrónico y los foros de debate, exigen unas normas de cortesía específicas acordes con las características del medio. Para evitar roces y enfrentamientos desagradables, uno de los Network Working Group que forman la llamada ISOC (Internet Society), creó en 1995 un conjunto de normas y reglas de cortesía que, aunque no coercitivas, constituyen un código práctico de buena educación para los internautas, y que recibió en inglés el nombre de netiquette.
