The present article about Domingo Ollea (1819-1895), a national reputation although he hardly left his native Zaragoza, traces the phenomenon of Spanish religious music of the second half of the nineteenth century from the point of view the "periphery". By uncovering some of his biographical particulars and details about his output, this article aims to go from a specific case to a general vision. A paradigm of religious composers and Spanish kapellmeisters of the epoch, his warn is a faithful reflection of the virtudes and defects charactenstie of our musical past, all of which is disguised by an excellent training and skilful handling of the orchesta and counterpoin. Concerned with the reeuperation of Spanish sacred polyphony of the renaissance, nineteenth-century Spanish musicography reached the paint of calling him -together with the great Hilarión Eslava-, one of "the twa greatest maestros of Spanish music af the nineteenth century". Alive in the collective memory of the Aragonese people until very recently, taday he is practically forgotten. This article aims to recuperate the image of a composer who, by all accounts, deserves to be recuperated.
