Ediacaran ophiolites from the SW Iberian Massif

Abstract

[EN] The Cadomian basement of the SW Iberian Massif contains several mafic – ultramafic units of ophiolitic nature. The Calzadilla Ophiolite and the Mérida Ophiolite have protoliths formed at c. 602 Ma and c. 594 Ma, respectively. The composition of their mafic rocks allows them to be interpreted as suprasubduction zone ophiolites, generated during the initial opening of a fore-arc basin (Calzadilla) and the later generation of a back-arc basin (Mérida), both basins subsequently closed during the cycle of convergence and collision that took place between c. 590-540 Ma. The available data on these ophiolites suggest that extensive oceanic domains, not considered before, could have participated in the Cadomian dynamics. Cadomia could for some time constitute a far traveled microcontinental domain separated from Gondwana.
