Las destrucciones de estatuas, yacimientos y museos llevadas a cabo por DAESH en Siria e Iraq no deben ser considerados simples actos vandálicos o acciones iconoclastas en base a su interpretación radical y tergiversada del islam, sino que en realidad esconden un discurso complejo que debe entenderse dentro del debate actual sobre la redefinición del patrimonio, particularmente de las estatuas, cuestionadas por representar un pasado colonialista o autocrático que ya no se considera digno de ser conservado y recordado.
