Abstract

[EN] The effect of the kaolinization process on the mineralogy and geochemistry of major elements in the rare metal granite (RMG) from Golpejas is assessed. For this purpose, the modal and geochemical composition of fresh granites is compared respect to kaolinized samples. The mass transfer during the kaolinization process is also quantified. The modal comparison shows a good negative correlation between kaolinite and plagioclase content, indicating that kaolinization mainly affected plagioclase. Geochemically, kaolinization causes a decrease in Na and the MALI index (Na2O+K2O-CaO, in wt. %), an increase in alkalinity (Al2O3/Na2O+K2O, in moles) and peraluminism (Al2O3/CaO+Na2O+K2O, in moles; values up to 7), and an increase in the A parameter (Al-(K+Na+2Ca) in millications). Mass transfer modeling gives us the key to understanding these anomalous values. During kaolinization, the rock loses up to 21% of its mass, losing alkalis and Si, while the Al is immobile. In this scenario, the Al concentration increases, not due to Al input, but due to its immobility and mass loss, while the alkali concentrations decrease due to their strong leaching. Therefore, the classification parameters involving Al and alkalis are modified in kaolinized RMG and are not recommended for their classification.
