[EN] The karotype of Phalaris canariensis L. is determined. This was found to have 4 pairs of chromosomes with medially-submedially attached centromere and 2 pairs of subterminally attached centromere. The longest submedian chromosome pair presents one satellite attached to the shorter chromosome arm. Tetraploid forms have been obtained after colchicine treatment. Pollen size, seed size and seed weight are significantly higher in tetraploid than in diploid plants while the number of florets and seeds and the seed set are lower in tetraploid than in diploid plants. Tillering is lower in tetraploid than in diploid plants, although there is a tendency to equal in the last growing period. Other characters, such as height of the plant and lengh of the spike do not differ significantly in both tetraploid and diploid. Selection should be fitted for better fertility of the tetraploids.
