Abstract

[EN] The continental shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz has become a common anchoring ground for large vessels, especially gas carriers, during the 2022 energy crisis. This study investigates the impact of anchoring on sediment and marine fauna, using multibeam data and sediment/fauna samples. Analyses reveal persistent rugosity patterns on the seabed, correlated with gas tanker densities and anchoring events. Mounded seabed and furrows were identified, ranging in dimensions from 100 to 450 m, with incision depths of up to 0.5 m in the marks and 2 m in the furrows. The complexity of the interaction between vessel activity, geomorphological features, and erosive processes underscores the ecological implications of human-induced changes in this marine habitat. The discussion highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address these interactions for sustainable marine management.
