Abstract

La ingesta excesiva de grasas saturadas y causas genéticas pueden provocar hipercolesterolemia, un factor de riesgo cardiovascular y aterotromb ótico independiente. El desarrollo de la placa de ateroma es un proceso multifactorial en el que intervienen diferentes tipos celulares (principalmente células endoteliales, leucocitos y miocitos lisos vasculares). En condiciones de homeostasis, las células de la pared arterial presentan una tasa de proliferación celular muy reducida. Por el contrario, la hiperplasia celular en la pared arterial es una característica del proceso ateromatoso. En este capítulo realizaremos un repaso general de los mecanismos moleculares que controlan el crecimiento celular en la pared vascular, con especial interés en el papel desempeñado por los supresores de crecimiento celular p21, p27 y p53 en modelos murinos de arteriosclerosis inducida por dieta rica en grasa y colesterol que desencadena hipercolesterolemia.
