Els Salvador i la Bleda

Abstract

Between the 17th century and the middle of the 19th century the Salvadors, a family of apothecaries and naturalists from Barcelona, assembled a natural history archive that includes books, herbariums, minerals, fossils, shells, natural specimens, archaeological remains, antiques and letters. This archive was started by the naturalist and pharmacist Joan Salvador i Boscà in the 17th century, and was preserved and enriched by his descendants well into the 19th century. The collection was housed in the Salvador apothecary on Carrer Ample in Barcelona but, around 1876 or 1877, it was taken to the castle (or farmhouse) of Bleda (today in the district of Castellet i la Gornal) where it remained until its transfer to the Botanical Institute of Barcelona in 1938, completed in 2013. From this recovery, the herbarium and the library have been catalogued, the furniture restored and most of the collections and some of the documents reviewed and restored. The connection of the Salvadors with the Bleda dates back to at least 1694, the year that Jaume Salvador i Pedrol, son of Joan Salvador i Boscà, acquired the barony from the count of Torralva and with it the jurisdictional power of the region around the castle and the Bleda church, and who later passed it on to his heirs and successors.
