Abstract

[EN] The historical exploitation of the Boñar stone quarries, located in the north-east of the province of León, played a fundamental role in the construction of León's architectural heritage, supplying material for emblematic Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance works, such as the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro, the Cathedral of León, the old Hospital of San Marcos and the Palace of the Guzmanes. The Boñar stone outcrops to the east and west of the locality, in a succession made up of carbonate sections, limestones and dolomites, alternating with marls and clays, locally known as the Boñar Formation (Evers, 1967) from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian). It is a fine-grained dolomitised limestone, uniform yellow-beige in colour, in which dolomitised fossil remains can be seen, with a massive or slightly nodular appearance (García de los Ríos and Baéz, 2001). There is evidence of its exploitation in Valdepiélago, La Vecilla, Acisas de las Arrimadas, etc., some of these places being referenced in documentary sources such as the Chapter Acts of the Cathedral of León (15th century), a necessary documentary review to measure the historical relevance of this resource in the construction of León's architectural heritage. At present, the Sierra Redonda quarry, is the only active quarry with an approximate production of 500 t/year.
