Abstract

[EN] The Karioi Fault is one of five main E-W or NE-SW striking active faults that define the southern termination of the modern Taupo Rift. The c. 26 ka Kawakawa tephra observed near the base of the stratigraphy exposed in three trenches excavated across the two main strands of the fault bound the recent paleoseismic history. Multiple metre-scale and decimetre-scale individual displacements are observed. These observations indicate past surface ruptures have occurred in association with both M>6 earthquakes on the Karioi fault and as probable triggered slip related to large earthquakes on nearby rift bounding faults, that are potentially correlated with volcanism (Villamor et al., 2007). The data contribute to understanding inter-related volcanic and tectonic processes in similar rifts in Japan, USA, Mexico, El Salvador, and Canary Islands, among others.
