The oldest basement exposed in the Iberian Massif has Pan-African origin and in Europe is designed as Cadomian basement or Cadomian orogeny. This basement crops out in the Mérida Massif with an excellent representation and little subsequent reworking. Two units in this massif, lower and upper, were generated in a peri-Gondwanan volcanic arc, while an intermediate mafic¿ultramafic unit is interpreted as an ophiolite, the Mérida Ophiolite. The mafic protoliths of this ophiolite were generated at c. 594 Ma in a back-arc basin. During their accretion under the volcanic arc, the gabbroic rocks were metamorphosed to the limit of the amphibolite facies, with limited migmatization and development of amphibolites very rich in garnets up to 1 cm in diameter. One of these garnets has provided a consistent U-Pb age of c. 590 Ma (LA-ICP-MS), which has allowed to identify the oldest tectonothermal event dated to date in the Iberian Massif. This age and its relationship with the chronology of protoliths in the Mérida Massif, allows a better understanding of the dynamic context during the formation of the Cadomian orogeny.
