Submarine mass-movements offshore Portugal in the scope of the new EuroMediterranean Submarine landSlide (EMSS) database

Abstract

[EN] Submarine mass movements are common occurrences on marine domains, from the shallow coasts to the deepest areas of the oceans. Massive landslides tend to draw attention for detailed study. However, hundreds or thousands of smaller collapses occur along the continental margins and other submarine structures (Chaytor et al., 2009). Improvements in the coverage and resolution of marine geophysical data, as well as its compilation in multi-source bathymetric datasets, allows improved detail in the morphometric characterisation of submarine slope failures and their distribution

This work was funded by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) I.P./MCTES through project MAGICLAND - MArine Geo-hazards InduCed by underwater LANDslides in the SW Iberian Margin (Ref: PTDC/CTA-GEO/30381/2017) and national funds (PIDDAC) – UIDB/50019/2020- IDL. The authors further thank the support by European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Program under grant agreement No 101058518 (Geo-INQUIRE)
