Abstract

Here we present the initial results on the magnetic (frequency-dependent susceptibility, fd%) and geochemical (elemental composition) properties of lower and middle Miocene, distal alluvial mudrocks that crop out in the western sector of the Ebro Basin. The sedimentological and geochemical properties point to a Pyrenean origin for the studied sedimentary sequence, as well as to incipient pedogenic processes that occurred after sedimentation. Variations if fd% and Rb/Sr, parameters widely used to constrain the intensity of such pedogenic processes, show similarities but also some notable discrepancies throughout the stratigraphic section, so that they do not allow establishing a mutually consistent relationship between the intensity of the pedogenic processes and the underlying climatic conditions. Thus, it is striking that the thermal peak of the Miocene climatic optimum (MCO, 17-15.5 Ma), established in the sequence from independent sedimentological and paleontological data, does not appear to be associated with enhanced pedogenic conditions. These results suggest that paleoclimatic interpretations based on magnetic and geochemical properties of distal alluvial mudrocks in the Ebro Basin must be carried out with caution and in the framework of multidisciplinary datasets.
