Abstract

The central area of the Eocene South-Pyrenean foreland basin includes excellent and continuous outcrops. These allow the study of correlatable stratigraphic intervals along the same clastic sediment distribution system. This work shows the record of the MECO (Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum) in 8 correlatable logs, 6 of them with precise magnetostratigraphic dating and belonging to different areas of the clastic system (alluvial, fluvial, transitional and marine) and to remote shelf areas of this one. The expression of the MECO global warming-cooling event translates into an asymmetric sequence of advanceretreat of the clastic systems. This trend can be interpreted as associated with both “upstream” controls related to variations in the hydrological cycle and sediment flow and “downstream” controls linked to eustatic variations that would give rise to a cycle of variation in accommodation rates.
