Abstract

New field data are presented that contribute to the knowledge of the kinematic history of the Alhama de Murcia Fault as a strike-slip fault, with transpressional component, preceded by a process of tectonic inversion (Montenat, 1973). During the last decades there have been a few studies in which different time frames have been proposed for the initiation of this kinematics. Knowing when started that transpressive kinematics in the FAM, evidenced during the Quaternary from geomophological and palaeoseismic observations and observed at present from seismic (focal mechanisms) and geodetic data, is of great interest to: 1) to understand the tectonic evolution of the Eastern Betics during the Miocene and Plio-Quaternary; 2) to obtain more precise estimates of long-term slip rate; and 3) to understand the kinematic and rheological evolution of the deformation fabric observed in the fault rocks along the AMF involving materials of very different ages. We present an update of the detailed mapping of several sections of the Lorca-Totana segment on the SE flank of the La Tercia range, whose tectonic interpretation has varied in last decades. Special interest was focused in the cross section along the Rambla de Lébor and in the Matalahuga compressional strike-slip duplex. The evidence supports a pre-Tortonian onset of the transpressive regime in this sector of the FAM.
