Abstract

[EN] Previous studies in the Ebro Delta have suggested that proper sediment management in the basin could partially compensate for the sediment deficit caused by subsidence in the delta plain. The sediment supply to the delta plain is only possible through the main irrigation canals and secondary channels that extend to the rice fields and are operational for six months a year. This study examines this hypothesis by estimating suspended sediment inputs from the Ebro River over the past 20 years. The suspended sediment inputs in the lower course of the Ebro River are calculated based on turbidity measurements in the Xerta Assud and river discharges in Tortosa provided by the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE). It assesses the suspended solids transport in the lower course of the Ebro River for the hydrological years 1999-2000 to 2020-2021 and estimates the amount of sediment reaching the delta plain through irrigation canals during the rice cultivation season. The results indicate that current contributions are not significant enough to offset subsidence and the relative sea level rise, emphasizing the need for comprehensive sediment management in the basin. Undoubtedly, significant coordination and funding efforts will be required for sediment management in the 21st century, like those previously dedicated to the construction of reservoirs or water conveyance systems
