Abstract

The Barremian record of lacustrine lithographic limestones from La Pedrera de Meià (LPM) in the Montsec range (Lleida) has been reassessed. This reassessment aims to shed light on the depositional and paleoenvironmental conditions associated with their formation. LPM consists of 50 m of micritic limestones formed in lacustrine environments, which range from littoral to profundal, featuring cyclic alternations. Low-energy conditions and anoxia in distal facies, combined with potential microbial mediation, may have favored the preservation of soft tissues, thus making the site a Konservat- lagerstätten. Isotopic and ICP-MS results suggest that lakes formed in hydrologically closed conditions, with dysoxia prevalent in most of the LPM section. Sr/Ba indicate a slight increase in salinity, and trace- element analysis suggests a gradual reduction in terrigenous and meteoric water input into the lake. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating geochemical and sedimentological data to understand the vertical evolution of depositional environments that host exceptionally-preserved biotic assemblages.
