Abstract

[ENG] The adsorption of 0-0 dimethyl, 0'43 methyl, 4 nitrophenyl) phosphorothionate (sumithion) by montmorillonite has been studied by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The montmorillonite-pesticide systems were prepared by the inmersion of montmorillonite in the organic compound. Sumithion, interacting with montmorillonite forms definite interlayer complexes which give a basal spacing of d(001) 16,05 A. This spacing is independent of the charge density of the silicate, the time of inmersion in the organic compound and the concentration of sumithion in 1,2 dichloroethane, for concentrations of 10 % (0,47 M) or more. The formation of the complex is determined by the hydration state of the samples and by the nature of the interlayer cations. The vibration v P=S in the infrared spectrum of the sumithion adsorbed by montmorillonite (complexes dried at vacuum) is desplaced towards lower frequencies. This shift is a function of the saturating cation and shows that sumithion interats through the P=S group with the interlayer cations. In accordance with these results and with the molecular size of sumithion, the increase in spacing, A = 6.45 A, corresponds to the intercalation of a molecular layer in the interlayer space of montmorillonite.
